Terms of use

Written to be read. If something here is unclear, ask at the contact address rather than guessing.

What this is

To Be Memed is an image editor that runs in your browser. It puts text on pictures. It is a tool, in the sense that a text editor or a paint program is a tool: it does what you tell it, and it has no opinion about what you make.

What you make is yours

We claim no ownership of anything you produce with the editor, and no licence over it. Nothing you make is stored here — the finished image is produced by your browser and saved to your own downloads.

The corollary is that responsibility is yours too. Whether you had the right to use a particular picture, and what happens where you post the result, is your call and your risk. Nothing on this site is legal advice.

The template library

Templates are drawn from the public template APIs published by imgflip and memegen.link. We do not claim ownership of those images and make no representation that any given template is free for you to use for any particular purpose — that depends on what you do with it, and it is worth actual thought if the use is commercial.

If you hold rights in an image reachable through this site and want it removed, write to the contact address. It will be removed promptly. You do not need to send a formal notice first.

The caption positions — the measured rectangles the editor places text in, and the format guides built on them — are this site's own work.

The free tier

The editor is free to use: every template, every layout, your own pictures, and the download button. Downloads from the free tier carry a visible watermark. That is the deal, and it is stated before you download rather than discovered afterwards.

Pro subscriptions

Refunds

If Pro does not do what you expected, say so and you will get your money back. There is no time limit worth arguing about and you do not have to explain yourself at length. This is a small subscription, not a contract worth litigating.

Acceptable use

Do not use this site to produce material that harasses a specific person, sexualises children, or is unlawful where you are. Do not attempt to overload the service or use the image proxy as general-purpose infrastructure — it serves the template hosts and nothing else, and is limited accordingly.

Availability

This is a small site run by one person. It may go down, change, or lose features. If it is ever shut down permanently, notice will be given on this domain and any active subscription refunded for the unused portion.

No warranty

The site is provided as it is. It is not guaranteed to be available, error-free, or fit for any particular purpose, and liability is limited to the amount you have actually paid — which for most visitors is nothing, and for a subscriber is a few pounds. That is not a trick clause; it is the honest scale of the thing.

Changes to these terms

If these terms change materially, the date at the top changes. A change that affects what a paying subscriber gets will be emailed to the address on the subscription before it takes effect.
